Common Types of Fractures

  • Leg and arm fractures: These breaks are usually clean but may involve the joint, prompting extensive rehabilitative therapy to regain full mobility.
  • Rib fractures: Auto accidents and other fast impact injuries can cause rib fracture, which may result in punctured organs, internal bleeding and other complications.
  • Hairline or stress fractures: Repetitive movement often causes these small cracks in the bone. Work-related activities, such as continuous heavy lifting, are a common source of this type of injury and can often go unnoticed and untreated, leading to complications and long-term damage later on when finally discovered.
  • Skull fractures: Accidents involving motorcycles and other incidents where brain injuries occur usually involve skull fractures that may affect cognitive ability, function and capacity to interact in society at the same level as before.
  • Pelvic fractures: This type of injury often occurs in a fall and is a common occurrence in cases of elder abuse. A pelvic fracture can require hip replacement surgery and often can result in infections, including bedsores from inadequate monitoring of the patient.
  • Comminuted and open fractures: This includes a bone that has broken into several pieces and has pierced the skin. These injuries usually require multiple surgeries, including screws and plates, to set the bone into the correct positioning and fuse it back together properly.
  • Greenstick fractures: A bicycle injury where a child may have fallen can produce a situation where the bone may have cracked but is not broken.
