Common Spinal Injuries

• Spinal Cord Injuries. An injury to your spinal cord causes symptoms, including paralysis, along the many nerves contained in the spinal cord at the level of the injury. Paraplegia and quadriplegia are terms used to describe the extent of paralysis, whether two limbs or four limbs are affected, respectively. Generally, any amount of paralysis will have a devastating effect on the quality of life of the victim. Additionally, a paralysis victim will usually suffer a loss of income at the same time incurring the exorbitant costs needed to treat and accommodate paralysis sufferers.
• Herniated discs: A herniated disc (also known as a slipped disc) occurs when the cushioning around your vertebrae (the disc) bulges or breaks. Often, the result is that the disc applies pressure on the spinal cord or on the nerves exiting the spinal column. This pressure often results in symptoms such as pain, weakness and numbness along the pressured nerves. A herniated disc in the cervical spine (neck) can cause symptoms in the arms and hands. A herniated disc in the lumbar spine (lower back) often causes symptoms in the leg or feet. Even one herniated disc can make it painful to perform simple daily activities.

• Whiplash: "Whiplash" is a common term used to describe injuries to the cervical spine (neck). Generally, a "whiplash" represents a strain or sprain of the soft tissues surrounding the cervical spine rather than a more severe herniated disc or spinal cord injury. Unfortunately, due to the high cost of diagnostic studies, such as an MRI or CT Scan used to determine the severity of a cervical injury, doctors will often take a wait-and-see approach in the absence of extreme symptoms. During this "wait-and-see" delay, doctors will often diagnose the cervical injury as a "whiplash" unless and until a diagnostic study later shows the injury to be more severe.
